I’ll never forget a conversation I had with a nurse anesthetist in my first few months of private practice as an anesthesiologist. I was 28 years old at the time and the nurse anesthetist was around 30. He owned his house and his retirement savings had grown to about $500,000. In sharp contrast, I was renting a small home, had $50,000 in medical school debt, and nothing in my retirement account. What was wrong with this picture?
