The Phoenix, AZ real estate boom of the 90’s and the 00’s brought prosperity and a lifestyle many could only imagine to Robert “Rocky” Detwiler. A healthy portfolio of investments not only afforded him every toy and perk conceivable – luxury cars, RVs, motorcycles, snowmobiles, vacation houses, and international travel, but the time freedom to enjoy them, fostering an energetic spirit and a play-hard attitude. On top of it all, he cherished a loving wife and active spiritual community he was involved in. He had risen to the top the old fashioned way; you could say he had it all – the true American Dream.
Then in one swift moment, his entire reality was brutally cut away, crumbling and blowing away like chaff to the wind. A longtime friend approached him with an incredible new investment vehicle, and Rocky seized the opportunity immediately after learning of the outstanding performance already seen. Things were electric in the beginning as Rocky envisioned the investment further establishing his financial foundation for years to come. Driven by ambition, a feeling he was comfortable with, he continued to allocate more assets into the investment, watching the figures soar. As a new emotional high took over, he eventually convinced friends, family, and church members to invest multiple six figure amounts.
Then came the devastating news – the friend running the investment was being accused of operating a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme, the largest in state history. As the house of cards fell, Rocky scrambled in confusion, trying in vain to understand the unfolding nightmare. The funds could not be recovered, and piece by piece his life disassembled like a worn patchwork quilt. Selling off most of his property to make ends meet, he finally approached the point of losing his 4,000 square foot desert palace.
Exiled from his church and vilified by friends and family members, he tried to salvage what was left of his life, moving out of state eventually starting three new businesses that all subsequently failed. After this his marriage quickly crumbled under the tremendous burden as the disaster culminated.
In the subsequent years, Rocky slipped into a deep depression. The pressures of constantly looking for work, moving from place to place, and living on the edge of poverty cut deeply into his resolution, his will to live wavering. Consistent apathy brought with it poor choices with nutrition and exercise, a mark he wore in his appearance.
This tragic period was fully realized as Rocky was forced to take up residence for over a year at his brother’s house, except not inside; in a 100 sq. ft. tree house built for children in his backyard. With no insulation of its own, the house was nearly unbearable during the bitter cold of winter.
Tired, broken, and overweight, Rocky contemplated ending his life, the only solution that seemed reasonable. Approaching this crossroads of existence, there were two distinct paths that lay before him, one the path of life, the other death. He searched within himself and eventually discovered that a strong spiritual anchor still held firm. It was at that moment that he knew he had to fight to live.
